The 1Q24 Market Pulse survey published by the International Business Brokerage Associations showed that retirement remains the primary reason owners sell their operations. For transactions $1 million or less, retirement (about 40%) and new or better opportunity (between 17% and 24%) were the primary reasons. For businesses greater than $1 million, 65% or more said retirement was their primary reason for selling. Surprisingly, burnt out was not the primary reason to sell for most sellers.
