NPR reports that all fifty states and the District of Columbia and US territories will share in the $7.4 billion settlement with Purdue Pharma and the Sackler family. Purdue Pharma, maker of Oxycontin, was accused of improperly marketing opioids. The plan, if finalized, will distribute the settlement funds over 15 years. North Carolina, Virginia, and South Carolina are expected to receive $150 million, $103.8 million, and $72.8 million, respectively. If finalized, this settlement will add to more than $50 billion in opioid payouts by corporations that profited from manufacture, distribution, and retail of the opioid painkillers.
