The North Carolina Medical Society reports that the American Medical Association recently completed its 2024 National Resident Comparison Report. The report gathered 3,600 or more responses from resident physicians across the US. The report examines six areas that reflect on resident physician burnout - job satisfaction, job stress, burnout, feeling valued by an organization, intent to stay post residency, and total hours spent per week on work-related activities.
Some of the conclusions were:
Residents report higher job satisfaction, lower burnout, and a greater sense of being valued by their organization.
Burnout appears to be easing as residents cite a more supportive work environment and practice efficiency.
The year following an internship remains difficult for many residents.
Female residents suffer substantially more burnout symptoms than their male counterparts (40.2% verses 27.8%)
The volume of administrative tasks took the top spot as the most stressful job-related matter.
