AMA just released its latest report on stressful medical jobs. Physician burnout, while trending downward, remains at a critical level in the US. Stress varies across the profession. Some specialities are inherently stressful. Others carry substantial workload and adminstrative burden.
AMA received over 19,000 responses in its survey. Thirty-eight states and overy 106 health systems and organization participated in the survey.
In 2025, 41.9% of physicians reported experiencing at least one symptom of burnout.
For 2025, these medical specialties had the highest percentages of burnout:
Emergency Medicine (49.8%)
Urological Surgery (49.5%
Hematology / Oncology (49.3%)
Obstetrics and Gynecology (45.7%)
Radiology (45.2%)
Family Medicine (45%)
General Surgery (43.8%)
Cardiology (43.5%)
Gastroenterology (43.5%)
