Reasons why happy Doctors quit

Group of happy, playful doctors

Medical Economics published an interesting article on why many doctors who like their jobs are at risk of leaving. LocumTenems.com, a healthcare staffing solutions company and the Advisory Board conducted a March 2025 survey of 739 physicians and advanced practice providers across the US. Three-quarters reported that they were satisfied with their current job. However, that did not mean that they were planning to stay with the practice. Here is a link to the report. Key take-aways are:

  • Despite medical industry burnout, 75% or more said they were satisfied with their current job.

  • Of the respondents above, nearly one-third said they were considering a job change within the next two years.

  • Compensation remains top of mind for most physicians. However, when taken in total, schedule flexibility, work-life balance, and non-compensation benefits (e.g., malpractice insurance, health insurance, time off, travel expenses covered), outweigh compensation alone.

  • About 36% of respondents said they had a second job, mostly engaged through as staffing agency (1099 work). Many take second jobs to reach personal financial goals or get scheduling flexibility.

  • No single employer type outperformed any other employer types. Corporate-owned practices ranked highest for compensation and work-life balance. Independent practices led in clinical loyalty and overall work environment. And health systems ranked in the middle but at the bottom regarding compensation.
